My almost 16 year old niece, 16 next week, wants and needs a computer, a lap top. She may be going away to ballet school next year and they take their school courses on-line. I want her to get a MAC. We are all going to be giving her some money for one but none of us have a lot of money to give her. Her dad went to look for a computer for her, went to one store and they told him over 1,000 for a non MAC and he said he couldn't get one for her. I'm not even sure if he even went to a store at all.

I've heard of places that sell refurbished MACS and they are as good as new ones but aren't as expensive. Anybody know of any good sites they can let me know about? I need to know ASAP so I can tell my sister. My sister has a PC, not a MAC, but my niece loves my MAC laptop.

Thanks for any help.

You can get refurbished macs through the apple store.

LowEndMac has listings from various sites for used and refurbished macs of all ages. Look under "Deals" and find the model you want. They price compare a bunch of places, and we've been happy with the results.

I checked out the Apple store but they were in the thousands. Way to expensive for us. If her dad was pitching in a lot, which he isn't, then it might be an option. However, for the ones in the thousands, I'd buy a brand new one, a Snow Leopard.

I checked Low End MACS and they had some we could afford. I sent that one to my sister. Thanks for all the help. If anyone has anymore they can think of, I'd appreciate it. One had Sun in the name. I had it bookmarked but when I went over to the new AOL, only some, not all of my favorite places came w/me, so I don't have it anymore.

Whatever you do, find someone who know's what they're looking at first. IMO, buying a pre-intel mac would be a waste of money.

Hey! We love our pre-intel macs as much as our intel macs!

Before you buy anything, check with the school and see if they have recommended minimum requirements.

Why does she have to have a MAC?

While I myself am not so knowledgeable about specifics in computers, I am happy to know that I have friends who are. As Stellaluna suggested, be sure you know what her school needs before getting into what and where to get it.

I don't know what you might have in your community, but in the town I live in, there is a small chain of very capable people who sell refurbished computers, both MACs and PCs. The chain here is called Computer Renaissance.

Depending upon her needs for schooling, another option you might look into would be a laptop running a Linux-based operating system called Ubuntu. I can say from my own experience, that Ubuntu is VERY user-friendly. As I said, I'm nobody's expert in computers, but the computer I'm writing this on NOW is using this operating system! It supports the Firefox web browser and you have options for things like word processing software and just about anything you would need from either a MAC system or PC ... with one difference: The software is FREE! Meaning, your only real expense will be finding the hardware.

Another thought: You might have a friend or family member who has recently "upgraded" their laptop, and now has a second that they're not using. Now, unless their older laptop was REALLY old and was running like Windows 95 or something, more than likely if they're running anything Windows 2000 or later you should be able to find something usable for her class. Just my two cents...

Remember if you get an Intel based MAC you can run Windows if needed. A lot of apps are only available for windows. Plus if you are a student you may qualify for a small discount or special financing.

Thanks for all the advice. It's all up to my sister now. I sent her the sites and now it's up to her. She is so stressed w/work and trying to get 11 years of child support from her ex and now, again, when he was supposed to help her w/this and he didn't, I thought I would help her. Thanks again, guys.
