I share my phone with my 10 year old. If he goes for a bike ride farther than the post office, I want him to have a phone with him. If he's riding around the neighborhood, I want to be able to call him when I want him home. I lend him my phone, which is a Net10 prepaid. He is very careful with it and always answers immediately. It has come in handy when he is hanging out with friends because he is not allowed to go into people's houses without asking, so he can call and ask me...quick and easy. We will probably soon get a third phone for the family. I am in college and need my phone on me then, and it would be nice to have another phone for 10 yo to borrow when he needs it. But it will be just that...a phone for him to borrow, NOT his phone. He's fine with that. Rules if/when he does get his "own phone"... The phone is mine. All use of MY phone is a privilege, not a right. No internet, no pictures sent or received. Plugged into the charger in the kitchen at 8. No texting while talking with anyone, including friends. RUDE. My stepson may at some point have a phone paid for by his mother. Our rules apply in our home, and if not followed, he will not have his phone here. He will leave it with mom or we will hold onto it for him.
