Romans 2:6-10 (NIV)
6 God "will give to each person according to what he has done." 7 To those who by persistence in doing good seek glory, honor and immortality, he will give eternal life. 8 But for those who are self-seeking and who reject the truth and follow evil, there will be wrath and anger. 9 There will be trouble and distress for every human being who does evil: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile; 10 but glory, honor and peace for everyone who does good: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile. http://vref.me/ro2.6-10

Churchgoers have the same problem. They go to church because it's expected of them. They serve in the church because they "should" do so. They tithe because the preacher beats them up about it. They pray because the preacher makes them feel guilty if they don't. I could go on, but you get the idea.

Galatians 2:16 (NAS)
Nevertheless knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the Law but through faith in Christ Jesus, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, so that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the Law ; since by the works of the Law no flesh will be justified. http://vref.me/nas/ga2.16

I notice that Paul uses the phrase "works of the law" three times in this one verse. Wonder if "works of the law" are something different than "works of faith?"

I would think those are two separate things...we need to obey His Laws, but the works of the Laws are different from works of faith because without works (giving, taking care of widows and fatherless) faith is dead.

19 The acts of the sinful nature are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; 20 idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions 21 and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God. 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. http://vref.me/esv/ga5.19-23
