Trish, I don't think you would be selling a potential partner short. Nor would you be a burden to the right person.

My SIL with fibromyalgia is married with two grown boys!!!

Faith, was she single when she was diagnosed?

I don't know. Maybe it's just me, but I think it makes a difference.

Trish, I don't have fibromyalgia and I won't pretend to understand it.

However, as you know, I've had a seizure history that spans 20 years . . . and seizures come with their own unique set of "stuff".

CS witnessed my having MANY seizures before we were married; and he, without question, accepted the responsibility of taking care of me during and immediately following those seizures.

In fact, the first seizure I ever had in front of him was before we even started dating.

One cannot blanket-statement and cubbyhole people and various situations. Some men and some women are not going to want to deal with someone who has a severe illness or disability. However, some men and some women WILL.

It really depends upon the two people involved.

Our Lord's Peace and Joy to you.

I'm not sure when her exact diagnosis came about, Trish. It's been as long as I have known her; however, that's only been just over a year....

Hi. I haven't had a chance to set up my account.
This one question got my attention. I have FMS and a snowball of other illnesses.

But I started an online support group for people with fibro and any chronic pain condition. There is everything from disablity information to just talking about what works and doesn't work for pain. Emotional side, physical side, spiritual as in prayer requests. It's a nice community. If anyone would like to take a look:

http://cloudsonlinesupportgroup.yuku.com/

Prayer requests are frequently asked, there are so many there with a wealth of information. I don't get to post frequently due to my health, but my bio and all is there under PaulaAngel. I do more with the other admin people, but when I am well enough I do go around and add if I can to people's questions.
There are some older articles that are from before we moved and if you see someone by Paula27 as the author, then that was me years ago.
Hope this helps someone.
Take care & blessings!

Are there any of you out there with fibromyalgia with food sensitivities? I mean, does the taste or smell of food make you feel sick? I know that I certainly do.

Those of you who suffer from fibromyalgia, what helps you when you're really having a bad day pain wise?

Hi Trish!

I was diagnosed about 12 years ago (1997), and as a nurse, that isn't a very "popular" label to walk around with, so I don't tell many people. I must say, though, that when I finally had someone take me seriously, I was so excited! It was wonderful to have a doctor believe me and tell that I wasn't crazy or lazy! At the time, it cost me my job because I didn't know what it was! I hurt all the time, but the pain medications didn't help. It resulted in a lot of time out of work.

At the time of diagnosis, there wasn't a specific drug to treat. He wanted to start me on Elavil. I said no. I was being treated by a chiropractor for an unrelated back injury (car accident + nurse= chronic back injury). I did a lot of reading and realized that if I pushed through the initial discomfort, got up off the couch and moved, my pain would subside to a tolerable level by about midday.

I have associated irritable bowel (aren't you glad to know that?), we also had difficulty getting pregnant, but the right doctor helped there, too. I am still managing my disease through lifestyle. I've heard that the side effects of that new drug (the name escapes me at the moment) are pretty rough. Most days, no one would know the difference, but there are bad days, too. My BF didn't even know of my struggle until about two years ago! She was shocked! It was just one of those days that I was hurting and having trouble getting going...

DH has been great about allowing me to have the days that I have-- he doesn't try to cajole me into doing anything that I don't want to do. I think it is b/c he sees that I don't 'milk' it.

I have another birthday tomorrow and I am sure not going to let this thing get the better of me as I age! Praise God for His grace!

I have had Fibromyalgia for many years, I believe, but was only diagnosed four years ago. No medication seemed to help until I tried Lyrica also. Now I can sleep all night, where before I couldn't sleep at all. It also helps with the chronic pain. It makes a person somewhat drowsy, but you can cut down on the mg if it does.

Ironically, after I was in a car accident last Fall, I started seeing a Chiropractor for the back injury and he has helped me feel better than I have felt in many years. After he manipulates me around every-which-away, I go to therapy and the girls rub lotion and some type of electrode thingy around my lower back and hips. Then they push hard on the pressure points. It hurts, but I have learned that I feel better later. Also I have been using a large ice pack on my back because of the car injury, but I think it has helped the Fibro also.

I plan on continuing to see the Chiropractor even after my car injuries have healed because I feel that the treatments really helps the Fibro.

Have any of you also tried seeing a Chiropractor? If you do, be sure that he is a licensed MD, not just a physical therapist.

He tells me that he will eventually help me enough that I will be able to stop taking Lyrica (and Hydrocodone on really bad days). I hope that he is right. He sure has been right so far!

Ooh, I had a great chiropractor back in KY... Loved the electrode treatment. Can't remember what they're called either! Good grief!

I'm glad you are using cold on your back-- most people prefer heat, but all that does is extend the inflammation. Cold isn't as comforting, but then again, if I can walk later, who cares?

I'm glad Lyrica (that's the name of it! I couldn't remember it either!) is helping you. I think I have mine well enough under control at the moment that I'm going to hold off. Are you having, um, gastrointestinal side effects? That's was I was warned about.

I don't have any side effects from Lyrica except getting sleepy if I take more than one a day. I take mine at night and I'm sure that it helps me sleep, which I welcome. It took about a month before I could tell that Lyrica was helping. I don't have any gastrointestinal side effects from Lyrica, but I do from Hydrocodone and avoid taking it unless the pain is extremely bad.

When I was first diagnosed, my doctor wrote a prescription for Zoloft and I told him that I didn't need it. He told me that I would, so I took it for a pretty long time and then decided to take myself off of it. I did it gradually, as I had heard that a person shouldn't go "cold-turkey" off of any medication for depression. And I can't tell any difference at all. I'm not criticizing people who take Zoloft or other medications for depression, but I just don't like that stuff.

I could tell a great difference in my back and hips once I started using the ice pack 3-4 times a day. Heat felt good, but I didn't know that it caused the inflammation to swell until the Chiropractor explained it to me. Ice is MUCH better. If you buy a good ice pack, it isn't too uncomfortable.

I had heard from friends about lyrica, so when I saw the rheumatologist, I asked if it would be possible to have it prescribed. She wasn't happy about it at all for me. I looked it up on the internet, and found out why. One of the side effects is that you can put on a lot of weight. I'm already morbidly obese. I don't need the extra weight.

I used to go to a rehabilitation physiologist when I got diagnosed with fibromyalgia. Had to stop though as we had no car. (Long story). We've just got another car, so will be going back to the rehabilitation physiologist again.

Part of me wonders if I should be going to the gym. The rehabilitation physiologist told the rheumatologist what she'd been doing with me, and the rheumatologist told her that I was doing way too much. I was told by the rheumatologist to do as much as I can that wouldn't leave me in pain. Sometimes that's only a couple of minutes, or even 30 seconds on the stationary bike. I have one at home. I can do far less than I could when I was going to the gym last year, or even when I was first diagnosed.

Trish, I can't say for sure what is best for you and your situation, but most gyms have a few complementary sessions with a trainer. I would say that you probably couldn't go wrong going back-- I'd make use of the free trainer, though, if that's available to you.

I don't know how RA factors in... My advice from my own experience is to move-- when in doubt, move. My pain is always worse when I stay down. Even after a great night's sleep, I wake up in pain. If I get up and get going, I'm usually okay. If not... pain for the day which usually spirals into a bit of depression. If I let that go too long, it becomes very destructive and difficult to come out of.

I am so grateful for my children and DH. I don't know what state I'd be in if I didn't have them to consider. Sometimes they are the only motivator for me to get up at all... Not often, but once in a while.

Well, it's been kinda difficult. Especially since I'm just a teenager. The pain got so bad that I could no longer run, which is one of my passions. And the fatigue was so bad that I just couldn't make it through the day. I would wake up from a great night's sleep and still be dead tired throughout the day. Because of that I got behind in school.

I tried taking Lyrica but it made me kind of disoriented. So now I'm on Elavil and that has helped an incredible amount. I didn't realize what a good night's sleep was until I started taking it. My pain is still there, though a lot less frequent. And I can run now, almost pain free!

Now just to get caught up in school...

Adrenaline-- just a thought. I don't know if you have been considering a profession, but can I suggest you consider nursing when it's time? I never understood why I felt so bad all the time! I would get up only after promising myself a nap when I got home! My first job out of college was day shift, still felt bad most of the time. When I finally moved to KY, the only jobs avail in my field were 2nd shift-- 3-11. Oh, joy! I couldn't believe the difference! I was working when I felt at my best-- it was great.

As I've posted elsewhere, I'm a nurse. Nursing is a great profession for someone who likes variety. You make good money and you get to make a real difference in the life of someone who is hurting! I know it may be premature, but I just thought I'd float the suggestion! It's sure worked for me!

I hope the elavil keeps working for you!

Blessings!

I don't know that nursing would be a career for me. I've seen a friend going through getting her nursing degree. She's a lot smarter than me.

At the moment I'm not allowed to work or study. Doctor's orders. Depression stops me from being able to concentrate particularly well.

With the fibro, I have problems sleeping. Other meds were tried, but I found they didn't work for me. So now I'm on a cocktail of meds. Edronax, Cymbalta and Endep. The combination helps me to get to sleep at night. The edronax and cymbalta were sort of useful, but when the low dosage of endep was put on there, that was the kicker that helped the most.

Oops, sorry-- didn't see your question!

Oh, trust me Trish, I have seen some winners pass the nursing boards-- makes me scratch my head! You don't have to be super-smart to be a nurse. A good nurse knows how to apply what she's learned and add that human element. It's funny, though... things that gross me out at home don't even make me blink at work... whatev...

I'm sorry this has affected your life so drastically! Hang in there. As long as you wake up each new day, there's the opportunity for it to be better!
