How do you deal with people who don't believe your pain is real?

How do you deal with people who don't understand the pain and try to get you to do things that you can't do?

Before I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia, I'm sure John thought that I was just being lazy. Things like walking to the sink to put my dishes there after meals was something I found painful. He made some comment one day about how I don't even walk over to the sink to put my dirty dishes over. Now he knows though because he sees first hand what I'm like. And I've taken him in with me when I see the rheumatologist so that he can ask questions, and also hear what she has to say about things. He's heard the expert, and she's explaining what's going on with me.

Maybe with your family, that might be what it takes. Getting a medical professional to explain what's going on in your body. Maybe not your current doctor. Would be good if you had another one.

Other than that, if people choose not to believe me, then that's their problem. I guess in your situation, it's not that simple though, Roberta.

I've had a really bad fibro day today. Really bad flare. Today would have been my mother's 76th birthday if she were alive. I don't handle anniversaries well. The fibro has been so bad that I've just about been screaming!

((((Trish))))

I have a friend who works at Wal Mart. She is in so much pain from fibro. She had to quit a few days ago. They were constantly trying to make her do things that she couldn't do.

I can understand how that would go. I honestly don't know how people can work full time and have families etc when they have fibromyalgia. I have friends with young children, and I don't know how they do what they do. I would imagine the same of somebody who works full time. I just know that I wouldn't be able to do it.

This lady also has a two year old granddaughter. She can't babysit the little girl by herself. She's hoping now that she's not working that she might be able to do some babysitting for her daughter.

I admire anyone who can work fulltime and have fibro. I can only work part time and that is more than enough for me.

It must be so hard on people who are carers too. Parents, or somebody looking after loved ones.

It's been a while since anybody's posted in here, so I thought I'd bring it back up to the top.

How are you all doing?

I've been having quite a few flares lately. There's been a lot of stress for me.

Last weekend, I had the most awful flare. The worse pain I've ever experienced. At the time, I didn't have the money, but if I had, I would have gone to an after hours doctor for help.

Called the chronic pain management clinic to see how much longer before I could see one of their doctors. Found out they didn't have a copy of my referral! Got the rheumatologist's secretary to fax over a copy of the original. Hopefully I won't be waitng over another year with no results.

Anybody out there?

I'm having a real problem with my fibro. Not nice pain. On top of that, my body is tingling. Not a good kind either. Don't know if that's fibro or not.

To make things worse, I've relapsed with the infections I had before. I asked my doctor last week for another round of antibiotics. He sent me for tests, but I don't see him for another 6 weeks. It's really hard to get an appointment with him. Another doctor at another practice gave me the antibiotics, but told me to g back to my usual doctor the following week if I was no better. I did, but now can't see him.

I'm here. Still waiting to see a specialist to determine if it really is fibro. Still dealing with a bunch of pain and having people tell me that I don't look like I'm in any pain.

Roberta, let me know when your appointment is. You can email/pm if you prefer.

Hey, I know what it's like when people tell you that you don't look like you're in pain. It's like people think you're lying when you're not. Not everybody is like that. I believe you. Hang in there, dear friend. Hopefully you'll be getting some help really soon.

Hey y'all! I have a question. Yesterday I noticed that when I put my hand under really cold water that on my fingertips it felt kinda warm and got colder as it got further up my hand and on several different occasions I'll be washing my hands in scalding hot water and on the top of my hands it feels freezing cold. I know that a symptom of Fibromyalgia is hypersensitivity to cold, but that seems a bit extreme. Does this happen to anyone else?

I've experienced it where my fingertips are kind of warm when my hands are under cold water. I've never experienced it where the tops of my hands feel freezing cold when I'm washing my hands in scalding hot water though.

I've never heard of that Trish.

How long does fibro last?

It's different for every person. I've heard that it's incurable, unless God intervenes. One of the guys on the worship team at my church though has managed to overcome it somehow. So can't say how long we'll have it.

The fingertips thing doesn't happen all the time. It is strange though.

Hi everybody. How are you all doing?

It's a really cold winter for us right now. My body isn't liking the cold.

Was supposed to go to a pain management course last Thursday and yesterday. I've had a really bad dose of the flu, so didn't end up going. I'll go to a later one.

Working with McGee (training him, walking him, etc.) does help with my other problems, but it really doesn't do anything to get rid of the fibro pain. I find it's just as bad every night. I thought it would once I got my muscles used to the added exercise of the walks. I still go to bed with pain shooting through my body.

Hang in there everybody! It can get better in time. It REALLY can. It may take years for sustained improvement, and fewer flare ups, but don't give up the fight! Keep moving your bodies gently.

Roberta, maybe you're overdoing it. Exercise is supposed to be one of the things to help fibro. My rheumatologist told me to find out how much my body can exercise WITHOUT hurting myself. Even if it's walking to the mailbox 3 times in a day, for example. Don't know what distance or amount you could do. When I found how much my body can tolerate, do that. Then gradually increase the amount so that it doesn't come as a big shock to your body. You may be overdoing it with McGee right now in terms of walking him. Once you see your specialist, they can probaby give you better ideas of what you can do. Maybe some natural things to help with pain.

You're probably right about overdoing it, Trish. I get so discouraged because I keep hearing from those who don't have fibro that I need to exercise more when I was already doing as much as I could. Then again, I have found that there are a lot of people who still don't believe that fibro exists and act like anyone who has it is just lazy. Not sure why they feel that way? If they had a disease that couldn't be seen, I wouldn't tell them that I thought they were lazy.

I think that is one the most difficult aspects of the condition, pink. The perception of laziness by other people...

I have a question for anyone who doesn't mind answering.

Has anyone ever said to you something to the effect, "If you just did {fill in the blank} you wouldn't notice your pain."?

Constantly!! I hear from my neighbor, my husband and other family members that if I would just take a walk or get a hobby that I wouldn't notice it. By the time I left Wal Mart tonight, I was in tears from the pain and I was only in there an hour or so.

It's actually hurtful to hear, isn't it? Essentially, you are being told you should be able to control something out of your control. Your pain. People tend to equate their pain experience with what you must be feeling. So they assume you can just buck up. The pain from fibromyalgia is a whole different breed of pain, though.
