I did it! I ran my first 5K! My time was a complete surprise to me 34.24. I am shocked! I did better than I thought I would. I'm so stoked! Woohoo!! And I did it with old shoes, never did find the time. One part of the course was a rocky, rutty, dirt hill. I felt like I was climbing to the moon. I'm not used to that. I'm a road runner. And other parts were wet grass. All new to me, but it went well! YAY for me!

HomeSpun--GREAT JOB!!!

Ds1 raced a 5K this morning. Didn't go well at all. He's been sick but thought he was up to racing. Afterwards I took him to UC. He has bronchitis.

That's almost exactly what my first 5k time was! Doesn't it feel good??? So proud of you!!!

Congratulations HomeSpunLady! Woohoo!!!!

I'm going to run a little later today. I decided to have breakfast first but I need to wait long enough to digest that or I'll get sick.

Now THAT's my kind of run! Haha! I ran a faster paced 2 mile run (faster paced than lately - but not really all that fast ). I did about a half mile walk, then did about a 200-300 meter sprint in which I pretty much died at the end.

stella--MANY of my summer bike rides are "ice cream rides". We ride to a town, stop for ice cream, then ride back. My guys can tell you the merits of many of the "out of the way" ice cream places!

I honestly have no idea. I would guess I'd get at least a week or so notice, but it could be months. That's why I want to be ready at all times.

Ames! I was just thinking about you! How's the training going for GTT? We're going to have to meet up there.

Well, the allergies are starting to kick into overdrive and my legs felt like lead this morning.

This is going to sound a bit odd maybe, maybe not, but I was complaining about lead legs on my running forum and someone suggested I might be low in iron. So I took supplements every other day the past week and I really do feel better. (So if you think you might not be getting enough iron...)

As a matter of fact, I had a great run tonight, even though I was tired. It was supposed to be 8 miles, but it got dark so I only did 7.3. And that was enough to push me past the 1000-mile mark. I have now run 1000.8 miles since I began running in November 2007.

Yeah, lack of iron can make your whole body feel like lead. Funny, we need a metal to not feel like dead weight.

I love your picture. I think I'm pretty much stuck thinking of you as Homey instead of Kathryn, though.

Well, I think it's going pretty well. I guess we will find out next week (yikes, it's almost here already!). I'm still very much a beginner in all three disciplines, so I may finish near the back of the pack, but at least I will still be able to call myself a triathlete then.

I can live with that. I've been called a whole lot worse, trust me.

ames--DON'T WORRY!!! Remember, it's a time trial swim start, so noone at the finish line will know your official time. And I will be there at the finish line! I haven't heard back from Shannon, but ds1 and I do plan on working the kids race.

Me too, girl. Probably this week.

I have mapped out my 17-mile run for tomorrow morning. Water bottles are filled and freezing. (I like to leave with frozen bottles and drink the delicious coldness later. ) Gatorade is in the fridge. Powerbar and Sport Beans are at the ready. Pasta is boiling. Weather forecast is good. I'm as ready as I'm going to be.

17 miles done and it wasn't even bad, so I don't know what I was worried about.

Good job! I have a question for all you distance runners: what do you do with your mind? I mean, how do you keep yourself into the run? That's like a couple of hours, I would go nuts. What do you think about?

Hmm...well, yesterday I spent the better part of half an hour thinking about where to find a restroom.

I don't know. It kind of depends on the day and the route and the effort. I run entirely in an urban setting and I'm easily bored, so I try to choose a new route for each of these really long runs. Yesterday I was out for about three hours and always had something new to look at. I even stopped for a couple of minutes to look over the fence of a Jewish cemetery. I just think about whatever comes to mind until something distracts me.

(I do not, and never have, run with an mp3 player.)
