karlie,

whew! You are going to be one busy person! Are you excited about starting the practicum?

carebearstare,

Haha, thanks for confirming what I suspected. Have you heard of a book called Organic Chemistry I, translating the basic concepts by David R. Klein? He has written a 2nd book for the 2nd half of organic chemistry as well. I bought the book for the 1st semester sequence (it's a recommended book for class) and I've heard great things about this book. Not sure about the book for O. Chem 2. I would think it's just as helpful. Maybe you should give it a try?

Well, I started gen chem 2 today and I am already wanting it to be over. I think the labs will be more interesting (they always are! lol), but I can already tell the lecture is going to be ineffective. The professor seems nice enough and he knows what he's talking about, but he's so boring! I can't see how I'll learn anything in class when I'm trying to stay interested in class. I guess it's a good thing I read ahead and know what the professor is talking about or else I'd be totally lost with the material he's covering.

I really am. Nervous too, though! But, I know God has gone before me and paved the way to this exact place, so I have confidence that it will be just what I need. They work in the exact area I want to specialize in, so it will be perfect for me.

LOL! Don't you hate that?? That's how I was in psychopharm. I knew the day I walked in there that it was not going to be fun!

A little nervousness is always good...get's the adrenaline going. I'm sure you will do fine! It's always a good feeling to know that God has your back.

Yes! I do! I feel like I've been in class 2 weeks instead of 2 days.lol. I have chemistry on the brain. The first thing I did after lab got out today was work on the lab report due tomorrow.sigh. At least I got it finished so I can relax the rest of the night! I still have to read next experiment for tomorrow but I am in no shape to do that tonight. I know this is a little sad, but I can't wait for the weekend so I can really focus on doing all the homework and things I need to do to prepare for exam next Friday.

I'm gonna kick my denial in the hiney.... I was trying to figure out when I took ENGL 101... and realized it was 12 years ago!!! (there is no smiley to portray how I felt at that moment.)

I'm currently working towards my bachelor's in Psychology/Christian Counseling. This is my first semester back to school since I graduated with an Associates in 2000.

Lol..it's okay! Welcome to the thread! Very cool, so are you taking any classes this summer? How about the coming fall?

A little complaining here..lol. I feel like 4 weeks have gone by, and not one.lol. I spent all last night doing chem problems, and this morning. And I also spent 6 hours straight earlier today working on this chemistry online hw due Sunday night. It was horrible! The professor set it up where you had to get the answer correct 3 times in a row (it would generate another question, different numbers when you answered it right). For example, if you got Question #4 right the first 2 tries, and then got it wrong the 3rd try you had to do it over again ALL THREE TIMES! It was like this for about 8 or 9 of the questions. I think I did each question...an average of 5 or 6 times. You had to get the answer correct 3 or 2 consecutive times in row or else you were in big doo doo and had to redo!

Yeah..I don't need to say how frustrated I got! I was so frustrated I almost cried. Oh, what's worse, you aren't given any explanations to how you got the question wrong, it just says you got it wrong. The only upside to all of this, I know how to do vapor pressure problems with my eyes closed..lol..how to find mole fraction of solvents and solutes using pure pressures, with masses given (or not given), with total pressure given or not given..yeah, you get the idea..so come exam time next week I will have no trouble at this stuff.lol.

Oh well, I wasn't expecting it to take me 6 hours to do 17 problems. I didn't even get a chance to finish my lab report. I'm dying here! Okay, off my soapbox rant of how unfair this all is.lol.

..... Summer D courses: ENGL 102 & HUMN 101. (I really love the Humanities class... although I wish my brain would wake up a little quicker. I got a C on my first test in that class. )

I'm glad they stagger online classes...

Fall B Courses:
BIBL 104 (Survey of the Bible)
    HIUS 221(American History)

Fall D Courses:
    PSYC 210 (Psychology)
    THEO 104 (Theology)

I forgot how much studying time it takes to work through a class! I don't remember it being sooo much.

Your chemistry class sounds frustrating...

Ooo your classes sound interesting! I took psychology and american history before and I loved both of those classes. Psychology epecially..Pavlov's dogs. That's the only thing I remember from that class.lol.

Are you only taking 2 classes at once? That shouldn't be so bad your first semester back.

Yeah, this chemistry class is no walk in the park that's for sure. Maybe I'd enjoy it during a regular semester when there is more time to study and do things like HW and lab reports, but this class has several negatives: all math (I like math, but I feel once I master one area, he's on to another!!), the prof covers about 2/3 chapters a week, the lab is 3 hours and we meet 3 times a week (and there is a lab report that has to be written for each experiment..), and there are exams every Friday.

I can do it, it's not impossible, that's what I keep telling myself. God got me this far so I know He'll get me the rest of the way.

....... yeah... two courses at a time. They are 8 week courses.

I always wondered why teachers have to cover so much ground if the student isn't going to remember anything when they are done. Sounds backwards, right?

Haha..that was a great video thanks for posting it!! Even though it was cute, what that little girl was saying is true. You should start every day in a good mood and grateful for what you have!!

Well, in this case, I can understand why he has to cover so much material. It's a 4 week summer class. So it's twice as intense as a regular semester..still, the microbiology class and lab I took earlier this summer wasn't as bad. I guess it depends on the professor. We meet every day for 2 hours for lecture. Than 9 hours of lab a week...so that's 10 hours of lecture and 9 hours of lab a week.

8 weeks is not that bad. What kind of things do you learn in a humanities class?

..... Humanities is my fave. It's important to know where we came from in order to help us make informed decisions for the future! (That's it in a nutshell.)

We have been studying prehistoric art which gives us important clues to how people lived back then... now we are studying Greek civilization (they are one of the best models). I think what I love most about school is how each teacher will stop during a lecture and explain how what we are learning relates to our Christian walk.

I did my associates at a secular college... and the teacher that made the most impact on me was of a different faith... so there were lots of ideas he talked about that really didn't connect with me. (I'm still glad he was part of my life.)

Compared to the other college... this one is really feeding my soul!

You know, you're right. Maybe by studying history we can avoid repeating mistakes. However, it seems that we humans always repeat the same mistakes...

So the university you're taking these classes is a Christian college? I've only ever been to non-Christian secular schools so I wouldn't know what that's like (having the professor talk about how what you learn can relate to your faith). That sounds nice! Oh well, I think of it this way, we live in the world so we will always encounter non-Christians, and I always hope to be able to touch or influence everyone I come into contact with. You know, be an ambassador to Christ.

About humanities being your favorite class..wait until you take psychology! It's very fascinating to learn about human behavior and the theories behind why people do the things they do (for instance, group think..how people behave in ways they wouldn't when they are a part of a group vs. as an individual). It's really fascinating!

Cool!

Argh, this chemistry class is really trying my patience! lol. Every minute I'm not in class, lab, eating, OR sleeping I'm working on chemistry lab reports or HW. Three times a week, I wake up really early in the morning so I can work out at the gym before I start my day (or else I'd make excuses why I shouldn't work out.lol..so best to do it first thing 6am!), and the days I'm not going to the gym in the morning, I wake up early anyways to do..yup, chemistry! I get to bed late from working chem problems (or finishing lab reports). This is weekdays, weekends I also devote to studying.

I'm counting down the days until the class is over.lol. I love chemistry, but even for me this 4 week summer class is so much work! I just keep remembering the end goal, get an A and do well. I have been keeping track of the % completion of the class and lab (you know, figuring out total number of days the class or lab meets, and then calculating how much class and labs I've attended..haha..) I'm so geeky.lol.

redo the doo doo. you do? hahha... it's waaaay too little time to cram in chem, and having to try again when you just missed the last one (clearly i dont get it or i'd have got it right!!) sounds super frustrating. but it would be easiest for a summer class for him to skim the actual problems and stick to theory, and it's really great that he's not. as you said, now you can do those types of probs up n down and all around, and you don't really know it til you can work problems. still stinks i can imagine... i've only taken language classes during summer sessions so far, so i can imagine even a basic science with a lab component too could take alllll the live long day. hope you're doing ok living and breathing chemistry!

i don't have much academic progress to report at work (pleaaaase let me keep my focus and write this stupid paper!!). i did take several practice tests for the mcat. hard to say what they mean, since scores were ok but if they drop on the real thing a few points i'd be pushing acceptable scores. and one of them wiped the floor with me and i'd need to GAIN a few to get to that borderline. hopefully that one was fatigue induced since i'd done a test a day for several days already at that point. eep!

gotta balance workwork and mcatprepwork.. balance balance balance...

Yup, it was insane! Glad that HW is over with!! Okay I just took the 1st try of my exam today and I got a 75%. I missed 2 easy problems due to math errors or else I would have gotten an 87, don't you hate when that happens! It was 16 problems multiple choice, all chemistry math problems except for one concept problem.

I don't feel so upset about that score for several reasons. Most other students had scores ranging from 18, to 37, to 50 (we take them on computers in a testing center, and you can "grade" your questions as you complete them to know how you've done while you take your exam..I was curious to know how others were doing..lol). So I don't feel so bad. And I imagine the curve will be a considerable amount so I guess technically I don't have a 75%.lol.

I think I am good in chemistry, I'm an A student, and I've studied this stuff backwards and forwards but the prof makes the questions intentionally tricky. I thought it was a hard test, if I thought it was hard, and got a 75% I can't imagine how other students in class fared.

I get to re-take this exam again Monday afternoon so I'm going to try and see if I can do better. The higher of the 2 scores is counted as the final score for the exam.

Lol. Don't you hate when you have several things competing for your time at once? What is an acceptable score that is the minimum you need to be considered a competitive applicant to med school? What is the highest score you can get?

All I have to say is I hate tests.lol. What if you're having a bad day and you know the material 100% but get a dismal score? Or what if you just don't do well on test formats? I hate tests!!

Wow, Always, sounds like you're having fun!

I hate professors like that! Or ones who can't word questions properly and the question isn't as clear as it could be and more than one answer could apply All my exams at this level are written, which in some ways makes them harder, but I find I like them better. IF you are very well studied and know your material and aren't relying on multiple choice guesses, it can really cut down on things like questions worded tricky. I like being able to explain what I know of a topic so that the professors get that I know what I'm doing and have studied.

My current class has been soooo easy compared to psychopharmacology last month! I'm not sure if it's as easy as it seems, or it's just such a relief to be able to actually have some semblance of a life again!

yep i'm worried about that too... that particular test on that particular day could go so easily one way or the other, and it matters quite a bit... panicpanicpanic. they can only test so much material so if you don't know squat about optics and no passage comes up on lenses, lucky you. if you get a passage on it, you could miss 5-7 questions right off the bat! aaauugghhh!! it's a 0-45 score for this test after they scale it, and i feel like if i get below a 30-32 i may need to retake. 33-34 is, according to my practice tests, doable but not guaranteed. if i could get a 35 or above i feel like that'd be good stuff. 85% or so of applicants with that score and my gpa range get in somewhere, and i do not want to have to apply twice. it is too expensive.

and i know what you and karlie are talking about with the tricky multiple choice... multiple choice seems like it's the easiest, most preferable type of test til you get that one prof who shatters your illusions.
A. answera
B. answerb
C. answerc
D. A and B
E. B and C
F. A B and C
G. cannot be calculated with the information given
H. none of the above
I. can you BELIEVE there's an option I!? HAHAHAHAHAAAAAAaaaaaaa.

ahhh gotta love evil professors. a lot of the time you know you'll thank them later but that doesn't mean you don't want to throttle them at the time

Ah! That's horrible! Yeah, so you basically have to study everything "just in case". I'm like you, I'd probably be panicking too.lol. How much does mcat tests cost?

karlie, that's great. Easy classes are always a welcome relief! What class were you taking?

The exams are 16 questions long and they are multiple choice. Well, usually with chemistry that shouldn't be a problem, and isn't for me. When I took Gen chem I, I easily got A's without curve and it was formatted like that. Most, if not all, problems were math and if you know how to do the math you get the exact answer listed as multiple choice answer, easily eliminating the wrong numbers. For me, the structure of chem is easy for me to learn. That prof I had for gen chem I was straightforward in his questions. While I suppose it was difficult material, if you knew the material, knew how to solve chem word math problems, you had no problem. He had no intentionally tricky questions.lol. He tested you on your knowledge, which was fair!

The prof I have for gen chem II on the other hand is very mathematically inclined, which I guess makes sense since this class is all math, but I have no problem with math it's the way he uses it.lol. What gets me is he gives you answers like "334.36" and "334.06" so you have to make sure your calculations are EXACT and no rounding til the end. It's pretty crazy, so inevitably you will make a math error due to keeping track of all those significant figures. Sometimes I feel he's testing us on picky math calculations. IMO, I'd think a prof would want to make sure the students understand the concepts behind the chemistry problems, not focus on the math itself so much. In class, he shows us how they get to the math equation we use for certain chem problems (how they derive it) and I think to myself "This isn't a math class, why do I need to know that?"

I guess I"m just frustrated because I prepared so much for this class. I read all the chapters, took notes. I read the chapters twice! I did sample problems for the first 4 chapters. And all that before the class even started. I have come to every class. I have studied dozens of problems, working them from every way possible that he's given (he uses his own questions and provides samples for us to work on). These sample questions are similar in format to his exam, like he lifts them straight from the samples. When I'm not sleeping or eating, I'm studying chemistry. When I'm not studying chemistry I am thinking about problems in my head.lol. I even had a dream about working on chem problems last night, isn't that sad?

It's Child and Adolescent Counseling. A lot of child development which is all review for me, but starting to get into the counseling techniques now, which I love learning. It'll probably get more challenging from here on out...lots of role plays and things.

LOL! I totally get that feeling! The harder classes can be all consuming! In psychopharm, I would fall asleep classifying medications and going over side effects and interactions. I even dreamed once I got called by a pharmacist and got a pop quiz over the phone!

Cool. Role playing sounds fun! So what kind of role playing does your class involve?

Haha! That's just as bad as me! I spent all a few hours last night working on ONE lab report! And that was just making the tables and graphs I needed. What really frustrates me is that we have to not only display the results of our own individual experiments in table and graphs, but also the class data that is complied as well. So it's almost like I'm having to figure the numbers for many experiments in one lab report.lol. And the horrible thing is, the class data is never neatly displayed, you have to figure out what the numbers are, organize them, and then you can use them. That alone took me a good 45 minutes to an hour.

I have yet to finish it, I plan on doing that today so I can focus on doing HW and studying for my next exam Friday. I'm at the half-way mark so I'm almost done!!

Cool. Role playing sounds fun! So what kind of role playing does your class involve?

It all depends on the class and what we're covering. Each class is pretty specific to a certain population. This particular class is kids and adolescents, so we're dealing with childhood disorders. Role-playing is part of our grade, so each of us have to take turns being the therapist and practice with the disorder/symptoms our "child"(another student) is presenting with. Sometimes we get to practice with our partner ahead of time, other times, we have no idea what is coming. It was really hard to get used to at first and I felt so uncomfortable in front of everyone, but I'm pretty used to it now. It's definitely teaching me a lot as we are critiqued by the professors as we go along. I'm getting really good reviews and evals, so it's going well for me.

That's always a good feeling! I'm almost halfway through my entire program...yay! Good luck, I know you'll do great!

Oh..I'd be nervous role-playing in front of the class! I hate being the center of attention.lol. I'd probably get nervous and make more mistakes than I would have if I wasn't having to perform for an audience... So the times you don't know what the scenario is...you don't know it until you get up in front of class? Eek! I'd definitely draw a blank and stand up there going, "Errr...ummm..."

Yep. But, for the most part, it's dealing with whatever population the class is teaching, so we do have some idea at least the age group and possible problems.

Me too! I am much more relaxed and comfortable when I am working one on one than with an audience. I'm very glad therapy sessions are private!

Lol. So does the professor critique you at the end of your presentation?

I took my chem exam again and again got a 75! I feel so mad at myself one question I got wrong was because....I READ IT WRONG! I thought it was asking for simple Kc constant, and it wanted the reverse of Kc which is just 1 / Kc..argggh! Such an easy question! Another one I got wrong was due to a stupid math error, really stupid one. Another easy question. I suspect I got both those wrong because I didn't take my time like I should have..or else I could have easily gotten 12 points higher than a 75. . Oh well, I'm not too sad about that. The average for the 1st try was a 54 so who knows how the class did on this 2nd time around. I'm just trying to make it through this class in one piece!

FYI, even though I am being a whiny baby about this class.. ..I still love chemistry. It's human nature, we complain about everything...myself included!
