I never thought this thread could be talking about Independence Day but I sure can see it now!

We are reading about several who have been dependent on nicotine, but now are independent from it, thanks to a lot of will power, God's strength, encouragement and a lots of flavored cottonballs!

July 4th can be others Day of Freedom ( from nicotine) too!

Happy 4th to you all!

You're such a smart cookie. :)

Smoke free since 4/9--can't say the same for nicotine (holding a completely nonfunctional electronic cig in my mouth at the moment), but if i haven't picked up a smoke in the past month, the prognosis is good. I draw the line at .......cotton balls. Gimme a pencil any day.

HAPPY 4TH! HAPPY FREEDOM to all.

May God take this country back and once again put it in the right direction. Morally and fiscally. may the gulf mess soon be controlled and the economy fixed so people can work and eat. Father, have mercy. Please restore sense to Washington.

Thanks for those kind words, oh2binva!
You are doing great with being smoke-free especially with all of your
recent stressful situations!

Almost 3 months smoke-free! Congratulations oh2binva!

I agree with your following statement for our country!

It's been quiet in here lately. I hope you are doing well, oh2binva.

I just stopped by to say that I haven't started a single day on this journey wishing that I had caved the previous day!

I have a BIG recital tomorrow, and have had a LOT of stress over this lately. This would have caused me to chainsmoke before. It wasn't before I came in and saw Eutys message that I noticed I haven't given smoka a single thourght today.

Hi, Euty, silverstring, betty and stella luna!!!!! a llama?????????

Thanks for checking on me. I am TOBACCO free for about 3 1/2 months. Given the tremendous pain and stress of the past 7 weeks postop and with the disc and discouragement, i am frankly a bit surprised I haven't caved. 10 cartons are still in the garage. 2 cartons upstairs. Frankly I'm scared to death to ever pick one up, cuz it will be like an alcoholic with booze--one puff, and I know I'm done . I also realize I'm not out of the woods yet. That's good, and GOD IS GOOD.

Still use the ecigs once in a while, and that's ok with me. They don't stink, they don't give me a lot of nicotine (less than a lozenge, which makes me shake and palpitate), and they have helped calm me and relax me, especially in the car. That's my weak spot, the car. Or in the evening, when I go out on the deck. My two former reward times. I don't miss slinking outside at work to puff away. I make it thru a whole day at work (when I was working, not back there yet) w/o an ecig, even when stressed. Can I say hooray for me? And thanks to God! The grip loosens.

Onward we all go, one day at a time, by the grace of our Lord, and his mercy. I thank my God for each of you. Silverstring, congrats on your recital, and Euty, Stella luna and all others, congrats.

Bettymack, did you ever smoke? You're such an encourager, regardless. None of my business, I suppose. But you're not counting days! :)

What a thrilling read!

Congratulations oh2binva! Smoke -free for over 100 days!
Thanks for your kinds words, pink... and oh2binva!

To answer your question, ob2binva I have never smoked, but my dh smoked for almost 40 years ( starting in his 20's). He had an abdominal aorta aneurysm surgery and he still smoked. He had an scary experience when he went to the mountains to "sneak" a cigarette and while he puffed on a cheap cigarette ,his legs felt like they were going to exploded! He promised God that that was is last cigarette and thank God it was! Now you know why I like to encourage others to give up the habit!

There was a comment in my morning devotion about setting a goal and, then, doing what is required to accomplish it, if we are indeed really serious. The example it gave was deciding to run a marathon. That's not something one decides the day before a 26.2 mile race. It requires preparation - daily work for months before one is ready to run the marathon with any possibility of accomplishing the goal. Then the race itself must be run sensibly and according to the rules.

Our goal is to live life free of the demands of a nicotine addiction. The preparation is to "close the door" on tobacco and to know that we can trust God to go with us each step of the way (see 1 Corinthians 10:13). The race itself is to take the journey one crave, one hour, one day at a time. And this journey is different than a marathon in that it becomes easier as time goes by.

Freedom IS achievable, but it will be tough for a season.

Euty ~ Day 1,421 nicotine-FREE

Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. For consider Him who has endured such hostility by sinners against Himself, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.

Thanks for sharing your devotion with all of us!
Even non-smokers can apply this to our lives too!

My reply on a new thread, Is Smoking a Sin?

I was also a nicotine addict for over 30 years until, in 2006, I closed the door on the Nicotine Slave Master. Now I'm 1,427 days FREE from a substance that pretty much governed my plans for any day, any trip, any occasion.

Perhaps it wasn't a sin to allow a substance to control so many aspects of my life and cause worry of a horrible death to grow with each year, but the FREEDOM I now enjoy from nicotine is priceless. I can drive home or take an all day trip without concern over withdrawal symptoms. I can enjoy a discussion with a friend, relative, or even a Bible study group without eventually being distracted by the Nicotine Slave Master's demanding call.

Sin? That's ultimately between us and God, but the FREEDOM that I now enjoy from it's demands is far more enjoyable than being on nicotine's short leash and worries about the damage it was doing to my lungs, arteries, and heart.

My So Baptist pastor told me that smoking was a physical problem, not a spiritual one. I took comfort from that and smoked for another 20 years. Given how relatively easy this has been, I so wish I had quit sooner. guess I never feared so for my life before.

I too am enjoying the ability to work w/o breaks to smoke, the knowledge I don't stink, and the ability to smell again. No more chronic cough. And this last 8 weeks has been so painful (surgery, post op sciatica, the sudden deaths of two of my cat kids 3 weeks apart), I weigh less than I have in over 4 years.........The 8+ I had gained is now gone, plus 5 more lost.........Once I get back to work Ft, the stress munching will start again. Sigh. At least i won't be smoking.

Glad to see y'all still posting. I found this recently and wanted to share:

Stages of Recovery from an Addiction
By: Portia Nelson

I walk down the street. There is a hole in the sidewalk. I fall in, I'm lost, helpless, it's not my fault. It takes me forever to climb out.

I walk down the same street. There is a hole in the sidewalk. I pretend I don't see it. I can't believe I'm in the same place, but it isn't my fault. It still takes a long time to get out.

I walk down the same street. There is a hole in the sidewalk. I see it is there. I fall in. It's a habit, but my eyes are open. I know where I am. It is my fault. I get out immediately.

I walk down the same street. There is a deep hole in the sidewalk. I walk around it.

I walk down a different street.

I had a sad reminder today of just how quickly nicotine addiction can knock you down. An online acquaintance, who quit around the same time I did in 2006, just reconnected and confessed to throwing away an 8 month quit in a stupid, unguarded moment. He's ready to begin the journey again because he has tasted freedom and wants it back.

Be vigilant. Like Satan, nicotine is just waiting for a moment of weakness to seize, rob, and destroy. But also remember, "greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world." (1 John 4:4b)

Ah, Euty. that scares me too. Yet i feel if i could make it thru this past 2+ months w/o giving in, despite pain , boredom and grief, that maybe I'll be alright. I am with cigarettes like an alcoholic is with booze--one puff, and I'll be done for. So it scares me to even pick one up. And I haven't. I look kinda longingly at times at people smoking, but then I smell it and yuck. Yes, I like these electric cigs, but can go an entire work day w/o even wanting one or having a "vape" (zero cravings or withdrawal symptoms), so it's more like a pacifier than a drug delivery, I think.

My fear is a healthy fear!

4 months and 5 days, but who's counting..........
