I stumbled across online literature.com a couple of years ago; they have lots of older "classic" books you can read for free online. At the time I'd just finished watching "Nicholas Nickelby" which was pretty well done, and one of the things I greatly enjoyed was the language. I figured they must have lifted all the best parts out right out Dickens' original text, so I decided to read it.

Virtually all of it I read screen by screen on a Blackjack II cell phone. That was a real challenge, but still not the challenge reading it as originally published, having to wait for each successive installment to be printed! Either way, it was a wonderful book.

Anyway, that's the strangest way I've read a book (I've since read a couple of others the same way). So what's the most curious way you've read a book?

Pauls_Kin,

If you like literature.com, you'll like Manybooks.net. You can read online or download ( in a variety of formats) to a computer or handheld device.

The strangest way I've read a book? A few times I've started a library book and decided to buy the book instead (for re-reading in the future). So I read part of the story in one copy and finished it in another copy. I've also done that while vacationing at my mother's house. I started a book she had, then either bought it or got it from the library upon returning home. (Fat books don't easily fit in carryon luggage. )

I have an ipod touch that I read books on, and my husband recently got an ipad. I've recently been "tag team" reading the same book on both devices, using the ipad while the ipod touch is charging.

Another site is gutenberg.org.

The strangest way I've read a book? I'd have to say out loud, into a microphone, recording it for librivox.org.

The most unusual way I've read a book was using a talking book for the blind. The difference between the books on CD that are normally offered to the general public and the ones for the blind is that you use a special machine for the talking books. You are able to adjust the speed so that the reader's voice can be sped up or slowed down. I turned it up pretty fast. Drove my mother nutz. That was years ago.

When I was young there was a personality clash in our house: I was an insatiable reader and my mum was over-protective and always worried that novels might "give me funny ideas" or make me ask questions she didn't want to deal with. So, at age 14, when I discovered Alexandre Dumas on our bookshelf, I took to reading while standing on a chair next to the shelf, listening with one ear for my mum approaching, so that I could put the books back in time and pretend nothing had happened. I read the entire of "The Three Musketeers" and "The Count of Monte Cristo" (more than 2000 pages altogether) that way. My mum never knew .

I read (actually listened to) the Thirteenth Tale on audiocassette in my car driving for work (not that unusual for me). However, on a Friday afternoon I was nearly to the end of the story and right in the middle of the big reveal. I couldn't stand the thought of waiting until Monday morning to find out how it ended and I didn't want to drive around wasting gas just to listen to the story. So I talked my DH into going to Target with me and buying a Walkman. I didn't even know they still sold them. I got it home and finished up the book lying on my bed listening to the Walkman.

So far I think that's the best story yet! Thanks for sharing it, Anoc.

techne is a show-off. I've read lots of books on Lithium.....but it's not the same (this is my favorite smiley)

I read Friday the 13th on floor of the aisle of a charter bus on the way home from a band trip in H.S. The aisle was lighted and it was at night. however, I fell asleep reading, and when I awoke, people's legs were all lying above me across the seats, and I couldn't get up. The book was scary anyway, and I FREAKED OUT when I realized I was trapped. Still a little embarrassing.

LOL! That's so cute, I love your story. That sounds like something I would do.hehe. I was an avid reader (hmm..still am!) as a child, and I used to read so much my parents had to limit how many books I could buy.lol. I'd get my allowance and use it to go buy books.

I can't think of any strange place (or strange way) I've read a book. I guess the strangest place would be sitting on the stairs. The strangest way, maybe while I was walking trying to read at the same time, or while brushing my teeth. When I get into a good book, it's hard to put it down.lol.

I have to say I have two that fit this,

I was testing a wearable computer setup, with a heads up display. One of those little plastic eyepieces that displays just text. I read one on that while walking around doing chores and such, with the ripped off top of a Walkman as a forward and backward button(it worked, and we had it to use lol)

The other, In a tub(empty) at 2 in the morning, in the middle of our last Indiana family reunion, reading the last harry potter book so that I could read it the first night.
I was in the tub because my father will wake up and toss and turn with any light, as we were sharing a hotel room, it was the only way to do so without waking him. So I am in a tub, with 3 blankets under me, a comforter on top of me, 2 pillows, and a Tupperware bowl of dry cheerio's for a snack on my legs, and a camel back with soda in it for a drink.

Dad walks in around 6 and I am into my second run-through...I think he has never wished more for a camera to be nearby than at that moment.(I hid it just in case )

I know someone who read "War and Peace" (Leo Tolstoy) by visiting the bookshop every lunch hour and reading a few pages at a time. Took him weeks, but he finished it.

Liked it so much that he then bought the book.

He is now reading "Crime and Punishment" (Fyodor Dostoevsky) the same way.

He intends to read the Encyclopedia Britanica next - all 24 volumes of it ...

WEEKS to finish War & Peace by reading it on his lunch break? I'd think it would take longer than that!

And I thought I was strange reading books while walking my dog! Sometimes I'd have an audio book cassette or sometimes I'd hold the actual book in my hand. The dog loved this because we'd be out walking for about an hour that way.

Now I am reading on my laptop and my blackberry.

On computer, serialized in several issues of the old (and sadly defunct) e-zine Deep Magic.

I write my stories like this ALL the time. She sits at my feet, pawing at me. If I sit on the couch, she squeezes between me and computer. Ahh . . . The joys of a jealous kitty.

Not sure if this counts, but I read several textbooks overnight at an airport once (between 11PM and 6AM)!

The quick backstory was that it was final exam week at my college and the dorm I lived in was overcrowded and loud. A dormmate of mine suggested that we study at a cafe off-campus, and sadly upon arriving it closed down. The absolute nearest location to us and one that was open 24 hours was the airport!!!

We decided to spit the parking fee and ended up hanging out in an empty terminal snacking on airport food, while studying for our exams the next day. The image of the two of us sitting alone reading a stack of books and notebooks all night seemed to pique the curiosity of the janitorial staff. Others looked at us and laughed.

*Yes it does Kim and when you are finished reading please send my cat home

Our cat does that and if that doesn't work she will try to lay across the book...
she's in that "it's all about me stage". Someone said it could last her life time !
