Windows 7

Vista is dead-end.

Only go with Vista if you have something that will not run on Windows 7 yet and it is an absolutely-gotta-have-or-I-die application. Otherwise, go Windows 7.

But if you really want something fresh, stable, and cool, try switching from tired old Windows to Mac or Linux

I knew this was coming as soon as I read the OP. It was just a matter of who would post it first.

Windows 7, Vista is already obsolete and you'd have to upgrade to 7 anyway.

Yeah...I kinda thought that myself. So W7 it is! I wonder how much of my stuff will go down the drain when I do this...

He probably would if they didn't all come pre-installed with Windows.

If you are going from XP to Windows 7 I believe you have to do a clean install. If this is your computer don't even bother with Vista even if you have a full 3GB of Ram. (Since I am pretty sure that chip doesn't support 64 bit instructions) My kids' P4 3.0 had 2GB of Ram with a decent vid card (X700 PRO) and Vista was an absolute joke after SP 1 came out.

If that is the computer that I linked to why would yuou want to put a new OS on a rig that old?

Vista runs good on powerful hardware but lousy on older stuff. Sadly though the only way to really upgrade form XP is to go to 7 since Vista is such an inefficient resource hog.

You do need to do a clean install if you go to Win 7

Most programs run now, but there's a few programs that are still not compatible.

def win 7

But if He did, it would be open source OS and application software ONLY:

Huh...well, maybe I need to check and see if all the programs I use on a daily basis are compatible with W7...

For most home users, there are few apps that would not work (and work better usually) under Win7 than Win XP. If you have some specific requirements for some app that has issues, consider alternatives to the app, or alternatives to how you run it.

If you have just one or 2 apps that are not used daily, there is no need to hobble/cripple your computer just for them. You could dual-boot the PC to run XP and W7 depending on your requirements. If you are buying a new machine, get Windows 7 as the base and run XP in a VM.
