I am taking out a ton of rock, garden and hardscaping from my yard and plan to plant grass. We are almost in August here and I live in Nebraska (zone 5). Should I wait until spring to plant grass seed?

HA!!!! Right when I was talking about taking out a ton of grass from my backyard and replacing it with rock, garden and hardscape!

You can plant grass anytime, but spring and fall are the best time. I just planted some and it is doing fine--make sure to cover the seed with straw and water twice a day morning and evening.

Good to know. Is there a variety of grass that does better when planted in hotter weather?

Sharon, call the county agricultural extension agent (probably at the court house) and ask him; his services are paid for by the taxpayers and he knows all this stuff for your area.

You and Kat_D should just exchange yards!

Himself grows grass really well, and he never covers it with straw--the just throws out seed by the handsfull wherever he wants it to grow.

Our old neighbor was so frustrated, because he went over his lawn with some kind of hole-poker, then carefully covered the yard in straw after he spread the seed with some kind of special grass-seed-spreader. His grew, but not real well.

I think the secret is not planting it when it is too hot. Wait until it starts to cool off, or plant it in the spring. It likes cool nights.

I've noticed a lot of pasture grasses are going to seed about now... that's how God plants the stuff, so maybe we can do that too (and maybe all the little critters who eat 99% of it are grateful, too).

I think I'll harvest a bunch of it, wait two months and throw it down. It'll be cheap, at any rate.

If it's not that large of an area, you'd do better buying a couple pallets of sod. Keep it watered well and it'll take in 2 weeks.
