About 6 months ago, I purchased my first ink jet printer...

It seemed to be decent, considering it was under $100.00. Well, the ink is now low, even though I have not even printed 50 pages...I do not like this printer anymore...my previous printer (laser) printed tones of papers...I had the original ink toner..which lasted for years..

Anyways, I want a laser printer, not a color printer..just black ink for printing business documents, etc.

Can you recommend a good laser printer where the toner will last beyond 100 pages of print?

Thanks..

Any laser you get will get you more than 100 pages. In fact, there must be something wrong to get only that much on an inkjet cartridge--unless you were printing up lots of pictures. I would get 300-500 pages on mine.

A couple of pointers before you buy a laser, b/c you can pay a lot of money.

(1) Look for rebates. I got my HP Laserjet 1018 for 65 after rebates--I don't think I've ever seen it below 100 apart from that. I watched for a couple of months, so if you can you might take your time to save some cash.
(2) Ask if the printer needs a drum replaced. This is NOT the same as replacing the toner (laserjet-speak for ink). Now with HPs, they place the drum with the toner so you never need to purchase a new drum, but Brothers (at least the one I was looking at a year ago) do--so this will run you another 150-200 (for a new drum) some 10,000 pages down the road. Now many folks just buy a new laser at that point, and don't ever bother replacing the drum, but the idea is--why set yourself up for that if you don't need to? HPs can last long beyond 10,000 pages of print jobs.
(3) keep in mind that you can save oodles of cash by buying "refurb" toner cartridges. I do this for my laserjet 1018 and it hasn't complained yet.

Bestbuy has an HP P1102w (wireless printer) for 100 bucks:

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/HP+-+LaserJet+Pro+Wireless+Black-and-White+Laser+Printer/9811982.p?id=1218177897716&skuId=9811982

You're not going to find a wireless printer for much less than that. Now you would probably still need a router connected to it, but even if you don't ever use teh wireless functionality its still a good price. On amazon its 125 plus shipping.

new printers come with starter toners. They are like a half cartridge.

There's nothing wrong with the printer. When you buy a regular cartridge you should get thousands of pages.

I'm not happy with Kodak. It seems to go through toner faster than our old HP printer.

I think manufacturers should supply new cartridge with new printers instead of starter ones. Some of the new cartridges cost more than the printers.

If you do wish to go with JUST a monotone laser printer, Brother makes a very nice one, and the ink is not all that bad.

That's their whole business model. Sell the printer as low as you can and then charge a ridiculous markup for the ink/toner, since that's the stuff you're going to need to replace more often.

By the way, you're not going to get thousands of pages out of an ink jet cartridge (unless it's a special high capacity one). Hundreds, yes, thousands, no.

The person who invented this business model was a man named Gilette. His motto was, "give 'em the razor, sell 'em the blades." Before Gillette, razors were not consumables. The blade as made of steel, and was sharpened on a leather strop after each use. A razor strop had another use, which we need not go into here.

The razor often outlasted the first owner, and was handed down to one or two following generations. Nowadays you're doing well to get 10 shaves on a blade.

PS: I just ordered a Kodak, based on the ads that claim they are better than others on cost per page. We'll see, after we go through the starter cartridge.
